What is Dance Theater I?
Founded in 1969 by Cathy Pickens-Nagle, Cathy's Studio featured an advanced dance company Dance Theater I (DTI) and community theater group Theater II. DTI is and always has been a diverse group of talented and dedicated advanced-level dancers who continue to dance generation after generation.
DTI is unlike any other company. DTI provides advanced classes in varying dance techniques, with a specific focus on contemporary, jazz, lyrical, modern, tap (and occasionally ballet and hip hop). While many members are former students at The STUDIO, others were selected by audition. DTI members are encouraged to teach classes and choreograph pieces in The STUDIO's annual performance.

FAQ
How old do I need to be to join?
Dancers must be at least 18 years old to participate. Younger dancers may be considered as Dance Theater Trainees at the discretion of the Artistic Director.
Is prior experience needed?
Yes. To be a member of DTI, dancers must have a solid dance background in ballet, jazz, modern, and/or tap.
When does DTI meet for classes/rehearsals?
DTI meets every Tuesday at 7:00pm for 1.5 hours from October until June. Rehearsals are included during class time. As the year progresses, classes may be extended to 2 hours.
Do I need to be trained in every dance style to participate in DTI?
No! We understand that each dancer has different strengths and may not feel comfortable participating in every class. In the fall, DTI will create a rotation schedule so dancers can choose which styles they wish to take. Dancers must inform the Artistic Director in advance if there are classes they do not intend to take.
Do DTI members get performance opportunities?
Yes! DTI members perform in The STUDIO's annual performance in June. Choreographers will cast DTI dancers in their piece(s) in the fall and rehearsals will take place during class time throughout the year.
Do I have to perform to participate in DTI?
While participation in the annual performance is not required, as the year progresses, much of class time is spent rehearsing for the show. The STUDIO recommends exploring our Adult Classes as an alternative.
Am I too old to join DTI?
DTI welcomes dancers of all ages! Members have ranged in age from 18 to 50 years old. While classes are challenging, teachers and choreographers do their best to tailor to the current DTI company.
How much does DTI cost?
DTI costs $900 for the year ($100 per month) as well as a $25 registration fee. Discounts are available for DTI members who also register for Adult Classes or who are selected to teach and/or choreograph for DTI.
